There are many things that should be taken into consideration and performed before you start online advertising. You definitely do not want to simply jump in, not knowing what you are doing, and start advertising, or you could find that the entire scheme blows up in your face. The whole point of advertising online is to get your product, services, or company out to the internet world. However, before you can do that, you need to consider the following things.

Set Up Your Online Advertising Plan

You may be thinking; why on earth I would need an online advertising plan. A plan is crucial when it comes to any aspect of your business. Without a plan, you would simply jump in blind, not having any goals, objectives, or basically any idea what you intend to do, how long it will take you, and how much you have to spend with your advertising budget.

Your plan should consist of:

1. Your Advertising Budget – How much do you have or are you willing to spend on advertising online. This is crucial, because while some methods of advertisements are free, many are going to cost you, per click, per impression, or per advertisement. So before, you do anything else, create a budget, and understand how much you have to work with.

2. Identify your objectives of advertising online – What do you hope to gain through your advertisements? Do you need sales? Do you need traffic? Do you need referrals? After creating the budget, knowing your objectives is the second most important aspect of advertising online. If you do not know what you want to gain from the advertisements, how do you know when it is working?

3. Identify your targeted audience – Yet another crucial point in online advertising. You have to know whom you want to attract to your website. For example, are you looking to grab the attention of teenagers, middle-aged women, middle-aged men, young women, young men, the older generation, hobbyist, corporate minded folks, or those looking for business opportunities? Knowing whom you are targeting will help you in designing the right advertising campaign all the way around.

Online advertising may seem like it is a simple, easy to do, method of getting the word out about your products, services, or company. However, it is not as easy as it seems. There are many things that must come together before you can create an online advertising campaign that works. Look before you leap!

As an Internet marketer, you do not want the second scenario to happen to your Internet marketing career. To be the “exception to the rule”, you must attract more web visitors to your site and turn them into long-term clients and build a loyal clientele base. Once you have satisfied such requirements, expect that there is something in return positive returns, to be specific.

How will you say to Internet users that you need them to keep your online business alive? In fact, you need not to tell them straight to the point that you badly need them. All you need is a clever mind and some online advertising to get them without making them realize that you badly need them.

There are various online advertising methods on the Internet and each method has their product that works better on specific industries. There are huge numbers of individuals and companies operating online who wants to advertise what they have to offer, and there are also huge numbers of individuals and companies on the Internet who are willing to provide some advertising spaces. However, considering that the online advertising market is quite large, it will be inefficient for the advertisers as well as the providers of these online advertising spaces to individually meet and talk about the terms of conditions of advertising.

The individual or company who wish to advertise will certainly contact an online-based advertising company that are willing to provide the space that the advertiser needs as well as distribute their advertisements to different venues on the Internet at the same time.

The more benefits are now towards the online advertising firm. And you are considering an online advertising business.

But before you go, there are several things you need to consider first.

Start to gather a collection of websites or online companies that are willing to place advertisements on their sites. Select sites that are getting high web traffic every month. In case that you have negotiated around 20 advertising venues on each website, you can sell an equivalent of 20 advertising clients with 2,000,000 advertising exposures every month. If an advertiser only pays for 1,000,000 advertising exposures, you can still sell the remaining 1,000,000 advertising exposures for a total of 11 advertising clients.

Now, what are the types of online advertising that you can offer? Here are some of the offerings that you can sell to individuals or companies who wish to advertise their products or services on the Internet.

Banner ads- these ads are typically pictorial ads that are commonly viewed on high-traffic sites and includes a hyperlink back to the advertiser’s own site. These are priced according to the number of ads shown. For instance, banner ads can be sold in lots of 250,000 impressions each.

Sponsorship ads- these ads are commonly larger than banner ads, which sometimes contain considerable amount of text. These are typically placed on high-traffic areas such as ezines or online newsletters. It is priced according to the number of readers of the newsletter or publication in which the ad is placed.

Pay per click (PPC) ads- these ads are priced according to the number of clicks generated through site visitors, These are commonly text ads, though there are PPC ads that are pictorial-based.

Starting your own online advertising business is another opportunity of earning more money on the Internet marketing industry.

Legitimate online advertising involves search engine advertising, advertising networks and opt-in e-mail, whereas, illegitimate online advertisement is done through spamming.

Let us discuss in brief both legitimate and illegitimate face of online advertising-

Search Engine Advertising – Advertising your business process through search engine is the most effective way of advertising, because various Internet research have revealed that more than 80% of Web search is generated through search engines. People consider the search results gathered from search engines is pure and highly relevant. So, if you are serious about search engine marketing, you should concentrate on ethical way of website optimization and submission of your website to major search engines and directories to receive online visibility.

Advertising Networks- This process involves banner advertising and rich media advertising like audio, video, text, electronic mail etc.

Banner Advertising – Banner is the graphic representation of a company that represents a website. Banner is a tool any website can prepare to impart a prominent impression on people’s mind so that they may like your way of business promotion and remember your name as soon as they enter to the net to search the kind of products or services you sale.

There are two types of banner- static and dynamic. Static banner remains same each time a Web page is loaded but dynamic website keeps on changing and rotating for each visitors. Advertising through dynamic banner is highly advisable since, more than one banner for the same product can be shown to the visitors and that help to increase people’s confidence over the products.

Rich Media – Online advertisement through rich media involves the use of interactive digital media such as videos, audios and animations which is done with implementation of advanced technological effects that catches the eyes of majority of Web searchers.

Opt-in e-mail Advertising – This is a process of email marketing where businesses are advertised through email. In this case, there is consent of willingness of mail acceptance between customers and advertiser. The advantage of such practice is the direct contact with the customers in low cost and the major disadvantage is the possibility of deleting the advertisements without being viewed. Although, such process helps website owners keep updating their customers regularly regarding new products/services or any new added features.

Illegitimate online advertising involves spamming, which refers to sending unsolicited email, instant messages, mobile messages to people who are not the willing recipient of such mail and messages. Spammers often harvest users address from Usenet postings, DNS listings, Web pages and by a unique way of guessing common names under each domain which is known as dictionary attack. Spammers also use Web spiders to find e-mail address on Web pages.

But, to achieve a long lasting advertising effect, one should never follow illegitimate methods, rather should always follow fair way of advertising. People often feel irritated if they are provided spam advertisements, but they obviously paid fair amount of attention to view and understand the advertisements presented in a graceful manner.

If we look into the past, present and future of online advertising then we can see that how well the business of Internet advertising has performed in these many years. While tracing the scenario of online advertising we could see so many milestones covered by this business. Advertising has always been an integral part of marketing and to promote a good/service every producer goes for some or the other form of advertising. Earlier no body knew what advertising was and what could this service do. With the changing trends slowly posters, banners etc came up to make people aware about the latest happenings. With the growth of media, advertising soon became it’s integral part. Advertising became a part of every media organization that not only helped to advertise products but even became a source of revenue for the media organizations. Will the upcoming of Internet, advertising soon became it’s part as well and the concept of online advertising now became popular.

While tracing the growth of Internet advertising one can see that this advertising form was not performing in the initial years because people were not Internet friendly and this kind of an advertising form was only for the elite class of society. Maintaining a computer system with the Internet connection was not affordable by everyone and so the business of online advertising could not earn profits.

Slowly with the growth of information technology it was seen that the audience started showing interest in online advertising, as it helped them to come across a brand online and even buy the products through online facility. Today major part of the population is using Internet for their day to day works and coming across online advertisements is helping them to remain updated with the market scenario. Online advertising helps people to come across the latest goods/services and encourage them to use online facilities in order to make online business a success.

Talking about the future of online advertising it can be said that in the coming years every advertiser will make use of only Internet advertising to promote the products. This form of advertising will inform, educate, entertain and even persuade people in the coming years.

With so many millions of people online, it is important that your advertising is designed to target the right people, in the right way, rather than attempting to bombard as many people as possible with your brand.

One of the biggest challenges as far as online advertising is concerned is identifying ways in which you can communicate your message to the right people in ways which will not have your advert either ignored, overlooked or specifically filtered. The problem is that most users have become wise to banners along the top of websites, and vertical skyscraper banners along the side of some pages too. This has resulted in many users developing filtered vision, so that they become unconscious of these adverts.

To overcome this method of not seeing or overlooking adverts, some advertisers have developed adverts which cannot possibly be ignored or overlooked, with flashy colors, vibrant hues and rapid movement designed to grab attention. The trouble is that most of these adverts are embedded on web pages that the user has specifically navigated to for the purpose of finding out information, rather than being bombarded with a carnival of hypnotic gaiety designed to wrestle their eyeballs to the ground and force them to read the advert.

The trouble here is that this often results in resentment – not a good start for anyone attempting to use online advertising to attract customers. Most modern web browsers have the option to filter certain advertisers’ messages and adverts, and if you resort to gross harassment of the peripheral vision, you are likely to find your adverts never even seen.

This begs the question – how can you possibly be successful when it comes to advertising online if an increasing number of visitors have developed the art of blinkered vision for those adverts which are calm and gentle, and actively filter those adverts which jump out in an attempt to grab attention?

The answer is simple – as with all forms of advertising, whether on the internet or in the real world – you have to think along different lines. There are many examples of internet advertising trends which have become hugely successful, and although copying these ideas doesn’t necessarily guarantee success, in some cases they can be worth pursuing, and if nothing else, they serve as examples of the fact that alternatives do exist.

Viral videos or viral advertisements are perhaps the greatest success story in online advertising. This is where a company or business creates what seems to be a spoof advertisement, or simple a very clever one, which has a massive appeal that makes people want to share the video with their friends and family. A hilarious, quirky, weird or thought provoking video, which may not even make it explicitly obvious at first that it is an advert at all, can often find itself receiving millions of hits, and being forwarded and shared across the internet at a rate which no normal advertising medium could possibly hope to match. Although instances of this are rare, they do exist, and are well worth considering.

One of the modern trends in internet technology is the wide range of ways in which people can share links, through website such as del.icio.us, digg.com, stumbleupon.com and network sites such as FaceBook. Finding a way to encourage users to share your adverts, videos and other content through these sites is perhaps the best possible way of promoting your site or services, at relatively little cost. It’s not guaranteed, and does represent something of a gamble, but the benefit of success in this field of online advertising is phenomenal, and unrivaled by any other form of advertising.

Online advertising is the latest and the newest form of advertising. Online advertising helps you reach a larger customer base as in today’s world almost everybody uses internet and surfs different sites for gathering information, downloading, chatting, etc. Online advertising is costlier as compared to news paper advertising but is cheaper than the usual TV commercials or radio advertisements. Online advertising is moderately priced and is very beneficial as it is performance driven and one needs to pay only if the desired performance is achieved by the publisher. Online advertising is also very flexible and latest updates and modifications can be updated with minimum fuss and minimum efforts. Also online advertisement has no time constrains as that of the TV commercials. There are many web sites that publish ads and hence this gives you a larger base for advertising as compared to other mediums like TV, magazines, news paper, hoardings, etc. Also one can choose the advertising web site and content that best suits the need of his company or that best relates with the companies product and services and then accordingly make his choice.

There are two main types of online advertising pay per click advertising technique and permanent or sponsored web site advertising method. Pay per click is the latest type of advertisings, here as permanent or sponsored advertising style is the contemporary and traditional style of on line advertising. Many people are shifting to pay per click method as it is more efficient and more beneficial, in terms of money as well as productivity.

Pay per click online advertising technique:

Pay per click is completely performance driven method of advertising. An advertiser displays or publishes his or her ads on a particular site or a particular web page free of any monthly rentals, etc. The web site or the web page or the publisher gets paid for publishing these ads when the internet users click on that particular ad. Depending on the particular number of clicks for that ad in a stipulated time period the publisher gets paid. The cost of the single click is decided depending on the popularity of the web site that has published the ad, the use of popular and most searched key words in the ad, the usage and popularity of the search engine on which the web site has been listed and last but not the least the ranking of the web site in the search list.

Permanente or sponsored online advertising technique:

Permanent advertising technique is not performance driven and the advertiser has to pay a specific amount of monthly rental as well as the publishing cost to the web site or the publisher. The per month rental of the ad is calculated using factors like the size of the ad, the position of the ad like top corner bottom corner, etc; then factors like the daily visits and usage of the website, the content and efficiency of the web site are also taken into consideration.

If you ever went job hunting, a common place where all individuals search for a good job is the World Wide Web. This is of course unless you engage in predating the Internet. It goes back right to the basics in this case as online advertising is one job, which has caught the eye of many, and is highly popular as it complements marketing management and  deals with graphics and articles written about career opportunities. Online advertising jobs are the new trend, which are being lapped up by hundreds of people.

One can take up online advertising jobs in their spare time, which gives then a good opportunity to explore their creative instincts, and provide a platform to experience the first workings of a job. The most human of all occupations is supposed to be the advertising agencies, where talent, experience, and skill count a great deal. This is so, as such qualities like experience and talent can never be replicated by machines. Well trained individuals and skilful persons are always in total demand.

Even if you look at the job openings on the web sites online, advertising and online marketing jobs are hoarded and very much popular. This industry itself is extremely vast, developed and hungry for real people that its growth knows no bounds. Trained professional, experienced individuals are always needed. You can be easily accessible to the various listings of online job openings though the web sites and apply for one too, which will definitely be helpful to you in the years to come.

PPC stands for Pay Per Click – a popular online advertising technique on the Internet. Found on websites, advertising networks, and especially on search engines, PPC online advertising involves sponsored links that are typically in the form of text ads. These are usually placed close to search results, where an advertiser pays a particular amount to visitors who click on these links or banners and land on the advertiser’s web page.

In essence, PPC online advertising is all about bidding for the top or leading position on search engine results and listings. Online advertisers do this by buying or bidding on keyword phrases that are relevant to their products or services – the higher the bid, the higher the spot on the search results, the more the people will find the ad (and click on it) to go to their websites (this is why some people call it “keyword auctioning”). Online advertisers would then pay the bidding price every time a visitor clicks through the website.

PPC online advertising is also known under the following names/variations:

· Pay per placement
· Pay per performance
· Pay per ranking
· Pay per position
· Cost per click (CPC)

PPC online advertising is usually done with the following standard procedures:

1. Setting up an account and/or deposit funds.

2. Creating a keyword list.

3. Choosing (and setting up) an account with a PPC search engine.

4. Bidding on the ad placement, including the search result words or phrases.

5. Writing out an ad copy.

6. Setting up the ‘landing pages’ for your ads.

7. Placing the advertisement in the search engine.

There are many benefits to Pay Per Click online advertising, making it an effective way of promoting a business ‘online’. Some of them are listed below:

· Get launched immediately. PPC online advertisements are implemented very quickly – they can go ‘online’ within an hour after winning the bid and paying for it.

· Obtain specific, pre-qualified, and quality traffic. PPC provides you with a quality or a well-targeted traffic. Visitors are narrowed down into ‘qualified’ people who are actually looking for specific products and/or services that you offer – those who are more likely to become a ‘lead’ (a convert) and complete a transaction (either by buying your product or subscribing to the service that you are offering.

· Widen your reach. PPC online advertising provides additional traffic to your site, aside from the natural or “organic” search engines.

· Track your investment. PPC online advertising makes use of a tracking system that will determine exactly who comes to the website and what they do once they arrive – the length of their stay on the site and the number of pages (including the actual pages) that they view. These are valuable tools in determining statistics such as return on investment (ROI), acquisition cost-per-visitor, and conversion rates (the percentage of visitors who are converted into customers or leads).

Below are some important things to consider when planning on a pay per click campaign:

1. Know your product. Take an inventory of the product and/or services that you have to offer (before anything else).

2. Stay within the budget. Determine your daily or monthly budget; and stay with it. This means keeping your budget in mind, avoiding bidding wars if possible.

3. Bid just right. Know how to bid right – a bid that is too high can exhaust all of your money, while a bid that is too low can make you lose that spot.

4. Watch the bottom line. Measure your profit margin against your spending or expenses. Know when to stop and terminate your PPC program – if you spend more on advertising but have little or no sales at all.

5. Find the right keywords. Decide which keyword phrases to opt and bid for. Do some keyword research, either by actually looking at existing search terms or with the use of online keyword suggestion tools, to know which terms are mostly used when searching for items that are related to your business. Focus on specific keywords, not on general ones.

6. Write effective ads. A good PPC ad is that which can persuade and move a searcher. There are several approaches to this:

· Discount offers
· Testimonials
· Celebrity/famous endorsers
· Money-back guarantees
· Free trials or sample offers
· Freebies
· Reverse psychology
· Major benefits (“Lose weight”)
· Direct instructions (“Click here”)

7. Maintain a professional-looking site. Your web content should be regularly updated and checked for spelling and grammatical errors. There should be no broken links or images. The website should be simple – designed in such a way that it will be easy for visitors to navigate and load. Include contact details to create a good impression among potential customers.

Done properly, PPC online advertising can be an effective marketing tool that will maximize the return on your investment.
