There is always a big discussion when it comes to comparing two of the best ways to advertise online: PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising and article marketing, otherwise known as “organic” or “natural” search engine optimization.  There is no denying that both methods can be effective.  However, which method is better?  Which gives you a bigger bang for your buck? 

You may get varying statistics on this issue, depending on which website you visit for information.  Oh yes, this matters, because you have to consider the source of the statistics and who is sponsoring the article.  For example, two sources of information (respectively, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and ComScore) recently produced studies indicating that PPC advertising was more cost-effective on average.  However, did the fact that Yahoo/Overture and Google were sponsoring this major study play any role in determining the final outcome?  Of course it did, those are the two biggest PPC companies on the net!

In figuring out which of the two is better, you have to consider cost-effectiveness as well as click-through-rates and direct conversion from visiting user to paying customer.  We are going to review some statistics a little bit later on.  For now, let’s consider some logical points that illustrate how PPC and article marketing differ. 

Search engine listings display more listings than PPC results, which does have a psychological effect on the user.   For some users seeing ten search results (each one relevant to the search) is enough to convince them that there is enough web information on the subject and that “fishing” PPC ads might not be necessary.  The catch is that in order to actually rank in the Top 10 SEO results for your keyword, you have to have relevant website content, not to mention technical prowess in programming HTML.  Search engines will be focusing on proprietary algorithm, or the most relevant websites based on the search term queried.  There is no “bribery” here, whereas in PPC, it is quite the opposite: whoever bids highest for each word usually gets the top listing.  Quality algorithm definitely plays a part in PPC, but in the end money talks.  In article marketing, we haven’t quite come to the point where “money talks” yet.  The best websites still win the search engine contest and that is an important factor to consider in your marketing campaign.

Even PPC proponents will admit that Pay-Per-Click is largely style over substance.  With PPC advertising you are trying to grab attention in just a few loud and occasionally obnoxious words.  You direct the user to a carefully crafted page that “sells” the idea.  This operation contrasts with article marketing, which doesn’t necessarily sell an idea on a single page, nor does it grab attention with a few words.  With article marketing, there is an entire article waiting for the visitor, which uses a methodical and “indirect” approach.  Assuming you are listed in the Top #10, your listing means that the search engine agrees that your website is the best authority on the keyword subject—for the time being.  People in a hurry or on a whim will probably click on PPC.  People on a mission will be looking for relevant content on their chosen keyword.

Therefore, the question now becomes which methodology works better for your business?  Are you appealing to the fast clicker or the thoughtful user?  Let’s now consider two sources of statistics for a clearer view of the issue.  First, one in favor of article marketing, the next in favor of PPC. 

In Favor of Article Marketing

Jakob Nielsen, Ph.D. and principal founder of the Nielsen Norman Group (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/defaults.html) researched the behavior of users who found search engine results pages and noticed some trends.  Forty-two percent of users selected the #1 search listing for their result, leaving 58% that selected another Top 10 Result.  The #1 site listed held the majority of clicks.  This indicates that almost two thirds of Internet users were not content to choose even the #1 listing on a natural SEO search.  That means that these users (and the majority of all users) are actually using independent judgment in deciding what links are most relevant to their needs.  Other related statistics (with sources from ComScore, Webxico, iProspect, SEOResearcher and Hotchkiss, Garrison, and Jensen) concluded that 77% of search users choose organic listings over PPC ads.  There were also studies that suggested organic click-through generated 25% higher conversion rates than equivalent Pay-Per-Click (PPC) click-through.

In Favor of PPC Advertising

Now to be fair, we have to consider some advantages that PPC advertising has.  The best feature PPC has is that it gets instantaneous results.  SEO advertising takes time, especially if you have a new website just submitted to the all of the major search engines.  Yes, this can be frustrating.  PPC brings you immediate traffic and sometimes brings in thousands of users.  Seeing your Alexia ranking take a drastic increase certainly pumps up your adrenaline! 

ComScore recently published statistics in favor of PPC, stating that their studied users had an 18.3% click-through-rate “paid” search results versus a 4.3% click-through rate for organic search results.  The conversion rate was also higher according to ComScore, stating that PPC had a 1.4% versus SEO’s 0.6%.

The Real Issue: Longevity

However, the downside here (even if you didn’t contest these suspicious results) is that instant and high volume traffic is, frankly, cheap and not as exciting as it first appears to be.  Remember that when you use PPC ads you are making a pitch and capitalizing on your audience’s curiosity.  When that curiosity fades, they forget your website—especially if it’s just a glorified advertisement.  PPC campaigns can also be costly and time consuming when you consider your duties as a manager. 

Another problematic scenario with PPC is that they have no staying power—unless of course you have thousands of dollars a month to blow in this recession.  With article marketing you get more quality traffic, and perhaps more importantly to you, you earn customer trust over time.  Internet users aren’t stupid, the popularity of Yahoo Answers notwithstanding.  Most users know that PPC ads usually aren’t relevant to their search—they’re just there because someone is consistently paying big bucks to get noticed.

You can consider article marketing as an investment that continually pays all through the life of your company (or until you shut the website down) since it generates traffic forever.  You can easily spend thousands a month on a brilliant PPC campaign and soon run out of money, meaning your ads go extinct.
Therefore, we can conclude that article marketing does have specific advantages over PPC, which are intrinsic because of the differences in operation.

•Article marketing generates traffic forever
•Article marketing improves your natural SEO ranking and backlinks
•Article marketing establishes trust—you appear as a professional in your industry
•Article marketing doesn’t cost you extra because of additional fees spend on websites, landing pages and superfluous domains

How About Return-On-Investment?

ROI is another key issue, as short-term and long-term profit must equal out.  Article marketing, by some authorities appears to have a slower ROI—(especially if you make money on CTRs).  However, studies suggest that organic ROI is more consistent than PPC.  Consider some independent research conducted by popular blogger Gord Hotchkiss who explained the situation in crystal clear terms.  Let’s say you have 50 high traffic search terms.  Now for these 50 terms, there are 2.8 million searches being launched in a month.  If statistics likes ComScore’s are correct and unbiased, that translates to 456,000 visitors thanks to PPC and 153,000 visitors thanks to article marketing.

The total cost of those 456,000 PPC visitors would amount to over 0,000 with an average CPC of .18.  Even if you work with an SEO company that charges top dollar (,000 a month, let’s say) you’re still paying ,000 compared to half a million.  That means article marketing’s virtual CPC amounts to .07.  Even if you apply PPC’s higher conversion rate, 3,647 converted visitors, you are paying 7.08 for each individual person.  Compare that to 611 visitors you earned through article marketing—you are paying .37 for each visitor.  And in doing so, you are also earning a higher quality of customer and generating traffic until the end of days.

Does your final ROI number take into account your total expenses?  Absolutely!  While both methods of advertising have their place online, when it comes to earning quality traffic, article marketing gets the last word.

Online advertising is the latest and the newest form of advertising. Online advertising helps you reach a larger customer base as in today’s world almost everybody uses internet and surfs different sites for gathering information, downloading, chatting, etc. Online advertising is costlier as compared to news paper advertising but is cheaper than the usual TV commercials or radio advertisements. Online advertising is moderately priced and is very beneficial as it is performance driven and one needs to pay only if the desired performance is achieved by the publisher. Online advertising is also very flexible and latest updates and modifications can be updated with minimum fuss and minimum efforts. Also online advertisement has no time constrains as that of the TV commercials. There are many web sites that publish ads and hence this gives you a larger base for advertising as compared to other mediums like TV, magazines, news paper, hoardings, etc. Also one can choose the advertising web site and content that best suits the need of his company or that best relates with the companies product and services and then accordingly make his choice.

There are two main types of online advertising pay per click advertising technique and permanent or sponsored web site advertising method. Pay per click is the latest type of advertisings, here as permanent or sponsored advertising style is the contemporary and traditional style of on line advertising. Many people are shifting to pay per click method as it is more efficient and more beneficial, in terms of money as well as productivity.

Pay per click online advertising technique:

Pay per click is completely performance driven method of advertising. An advertiser displays or publishes his or her ads on a particular site or a particular web page free of any monthly rentals, etc. The web site or the web page or the publisher gets paid for publishing these ads when the internet users click on that particular ad. Depending on the particular number of clicks for that ad in a stipulated time period the publisher gets paid. The cost of the single click is decided depending on the popularity of the web site that has published the ad, the use of popular and most searched key words in the ad, the usage and popularity of the search engine on which the web site has been listed and last but not the least the ranking of the web site in the search list.

Permanente or sponsored online advertising technique:

Permanent advertising technique is not performance driven and the advertiser has to pay a specific amount of monthly rental as well as the publishing cost to the web site or the publisher. The per month rental of the ad is calculated using factors like the size of the ad, the position of the ad like top corner bottom corner, etc; then factors like the daily visits and usage of the website, the content and efficiency of the web site are also taken into consideration.

Keys To Drafting Internet Advertising Agreements

Ever since the Internet came of age in the mid 1990s, advertising deals have become extremely common. As we all know, companies advertise on the Internet through the usage of banners and through search engines such as Yahoo and Google in an effort to drive users to their websites. This article will analyze the key provisions usually found in Internet Advertising Agreements and will hopefully provide drafters of these agreements with guidance before they commence the difficult drafting process. For purposes of this article, the company purchasing the advertising shall be referred to as “purchaser” and the seller of the advertising shall be referred to as “advertiser.”

1. Definitions

The first paragraph of an Internet advertising agreement should set forth the definitions of the key terms that the agreement will refer to frequently. Since the agreement will likely use the term “click-through”, this term should be defined, and is usually described as a “user presence on the advertising purchaser’s website that originated through the advertiser’s promotional advertisements or promotions as part of this Agreement.”

2. Term

This paragraph should recite that the agreement will commence upon the effective date and shall last for a specified amount of time.

3. Positioning

This paragraph should clarify how the advertising banners will be positioned on the advertiser’s website. This provision may simply refer to a positioning schedule attached as an exhibit. On the other hand, if the parties decided not to agree on a specific positioning schedule, the agreement might simply recite that the advertiser has sole discretion to control the positioning so long as it uses its reasonable best efforts to position the banners in such a way as to drive traffic to the purchaser’s website. The drafter for the advertiser may also recite that the advertiser shall not be liable for any claims relating to usage statistics.

4. Click-throughs

Before a drafter of an advertising agreement can go to work, she must know whether her client will be paying per banner ad or per click-through. One “click-through” means that a user has clicked on the banner or the link to the purchaser’s website. If the agreement is for a certain amount of click-throughs per month, this provision of the agreement must clearly describe the commitments promised by the advertiser. Let’s say that the advertiser is promising 1,000 click-throughs per month. The agreement could thus read “Advertiser shall deliver no less than 1,000 click-throughs per month, and purchaser shall pay to advertiser the monthly amounts according to the payment schedule set forth in exhibit A.”

This “click-through” provision may also want to address what happens if the advertiser cannot make good on these click-through commitments. For instance, it may recite that “if advertiser misses any monthly target, advertiser shall “make good” the difference within two months. If advertiser does not make good the click-through difference within two months (60 days), purchaser may suspend that portion of its monthly payments that represent the percentage of click-throughs missed by advertiser until advertiser delivers such make goods.”

5. Exclusivity

If the deal points include an exclusivity provision, the agreement must reflect this intention. The agreement should be drafted to recite something to the effect of “no competitor of purchaser shall be permitted to place or purchase from advertiser, banner or promotional advertising as defined in Exhibit B, and advertiser agrees to use reasonable efforts to prevent third parties that are entitled to place ads on advertiser’s site from placing any banner or promotional ads of purchaser’s competitors.”

These are the most important provisions of an Internet Advertising Agreement. Other provisions covering Cancellation and Termination Limitation of Advertiser’s Liability, Indemnification, and Advertiser’s Right to Reject Advertising may also be included. In all, it is critical for the drafter of the agreement to know the deal points backwards and forwards and to carefully draft the agreement accordingly.

Found on websites, advertising networks, and especially on search engines, PPC online advertising involves sponsored links that are typically in the form of text ads. These are usually placed close to search results, where an advertiser pays a particular amount to visitors who click on these links or banners and land on the advertiser’s web page.

In essence, PPC online advertising is all about bidding for the top or leading position on search engine results and listings. Online advertisers do this by buying or bidding on keyword phrases that are relevant to their products or services – the higher the bid, the higher the spot on the search results, the more the people will find the ad (and click on it) to go to their websites (this is why some people call it “keyword auctioning”). Online advertisers would then pay the bidding price every time a visitor clicks through the website.

PPC online advertising is also known under the following names/variations:

· Pay per placement
· Pay per performance
· Pay per ranking
· Pay per position
· Cost per click (CPC)

PPC online advertising is usually done with the following standard procedures:

1. Setting up an account and/or deposit funds.

2. Creating a keyword list.

3. Choosing (and setting up) an account with a PPC search engine.

4. Bidding on the ad placement, including the search result words or phrases.

5. Writing out an ad copy.

6. Setting up the ‘landing pages’ for your ads.

7. Placing the advertisement in the search engine.

There are many benefits to Pay Per Click online advertising, making it an effective way of promoting a business ‘online’. Some of them are listed below:

· Get launched immediately. PPC online advertisements are implemented very quickly – they can go ‘online’ within an hour after winning the bid and paying for it.

· Obtain specific, pre-qualified, and quality traffic. PPC provides you with a quality or a well-targeted traffic. Visitors are narrowed down into ‘qualified’ people who are actually looking for specific products and/or services that you offer – those who are more likely to become a ‘lead’ (a convert) and complete a transaction (either by buying your product or subscribing to the service that you are offering.

· Widen your reach. PPC online advertising provides additional traffic to your site, aside from the natural or “organic” search engines.

· Track your investment. PPC online advertising makes use of a tracking system that will determine exactly who comes to the website and what they do once they arrive – the length of their stay on the site and the number of pages (including the actual pages) that they view. These are valuable tools in determining statistics such as return on investment (ROI), acquisition cost-per-visitor, and conversion rates (the percentage of visitors who are converted into customers or leads).

Below are some important things to consider when planning on a pay per click campaign:

1. Know your product. Take an inventory of the product and/or services that you have to offer (before anything else).

2. Stay within the budget. Determine your daily or monthly budget; and stay with it. This means keeping your budget in mind, avoiding bidding wars if possible.

3. Bid just right. Know how to bid right – a bid that is too high can exhaust all of your money, while a bid that is too low can make you lose that spot.

4. Watch the bottom line. Measure your profit margin against your spending or expenses. Know when to stop and terminate your PPC program – if you spend more on advertising but have little or no sales at all.

5. Find the right keywords. Decide which keyword phrases to opt and bid for. Do some keyword research, either by actually looking at existing search terms or with the use of online keyword suggestion tools, to know which terms are mostly used when searching for items that are related to your business. Focus on specific keywords, not on general ones.

6. Write effective ads. A good PPC ad is that which can persuade and move a searcher. There are several approaches to this:

· Discount offers
· Testimonials
· Celebrity/famous endorsers
· Money-back guarantees
· Free trials or sample offers
· Freebies
· Reverse psychology
· Major benefits (“Lose weight”)
· Direct instructions (“Click here”)

7. Maintain a professional-looking site. Your web content should be regularly updated and checked for spelling and grammatical errors. There should be no broken links or images. The website should be simple – designed in such a way that it will be easy for visitors to navigate and load. Include contact details to create a good impression among potential customers.

Done properly, PPC online advertising can be an effective marketing tool that will maximize the return on your investment.

Rising out of its century-long-infancy, online advertising is fast overtaking traditional advertising mediums like newspapers, magazines and even the radio. Most of the business owners are fast driving at the conclusion that the Internet is now becoming an essential tool, in terms of the daily running of their businesses. When it comes to brand awareness, its recognition and networking, the huge effectiveness of the Internet cannot be side pressed. Besides, online advertising can directly relate to the sales of a product, which is also vitally important for a company.

With almost all web visitors expecting online advertising on commercial websites, the advertisers have also recognized its true potential and the various opportunities it creates on the target audiences. Thus, clients who all depend on the advertisements placed on the website have come to realize that they need a web page design that provides the necessary screen space and a proper layout for selling advertisements. Thus, the website designer must be able to design and develop a website that can produce advertisement revenue and at the same time meet the needs of visitors.

In general, the web designers rarely concern themselves with what advertisements will appear in the website page. Again, not making a note of them while planning the page design may result in a very awkward web page layout. So its best to consider the placement of the advertisements during the first stage of the designing process, giving the website an organised look when it is complete. Here the website designer has to create an overall delicate balance, keeping both the advertisers as well as the visitors in mind and what will appeal to both of them. The designer has to see that, in no way, should the flow of the content or information on the website be disrupted.

Some of the few vital points that the website designer will have to keep in mind while designing the web page include the layout and spacing of the advertisements. Advertisements can easily take up large chunks of space in the layout of a website, be it a big banner or several smaller ones. Here the website designer will have to follow some layout strategies, so as to give the advertisements a feel of being a part of the full complete web page.

Next thing to be kept in mind is the colour schemes used in the advertisements. Online advertisements often use bright and vibrant colours so as to make them stand out and grab the viewer’s attention. Here the job of the website designer will be to access the colour scheme and decide on shades that will match the colours used in the advertisements and not make the page look like an artist’s palette. Even if the designer have not seen the advertisement to be put on the web page, it is always better to play safe using muted colour schemes.

Most importantly, the website designer has to give more priority to the main flow of information or content of the website, for which the website is being made in the first place. If the website is a e-commerce sort of website, then there will be more advertisements compared to a normal website. So, placement of the advertisements and the content has to be balanced and the designer will have to have quite a foresight so as to make a success of the full website.

Thus the job of the website designer is quite challenging as he will have to keep an ongoing tab on the impact of online advertisements on the website layout.

DENVER — Internet marketing first began in 1994 with the appearance of the inaugural banner ad on www.wired.com. Since then, internet advertising has exceeded all computer critics’ expectations, replacing print advertising as well as taking a good market share away from radio, TV, cable and billboard advertising markets.

“Online advertising in a newsletter like Corporate Apparel Magazine cuts through the clutter of large print magazines, delivers pinpoint messages hot-linked to advertiser Web sites for immediate commerce, and drastically lower the cost-per-thousand (CPM) of traditional advertising,” Rundles said. “Moreover, busy sales executives now turn to the Web and e-newsletters more often for the critical trade information that drives their business.”

Standardizing internet marketing came next with the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) setting guidelines on advertising sizes with the goal of making promotions opportunities on the internet easier to understand, particularly for newbie Web advertisers.  Basically, the theory of the larger the ad, the more attention it receives—the same notion as print advertising—is in force on the internet.

Size does matter even in cyberspace. It has been proven to directly relate to the number of click-throughs generated—details that will affect your internet marketing strategy.

Pop-up ads literally jump out at the visitor to get his or her attention.  They are often flash ads that Web surfers can’t help but notice. This attention-getting device drives clicks.

Pop-Under ads (the same size as pop-ups) work the same way, except they pop up underneath the page the visitor is currently viewing so the ad is not seen until the window is closed.

Accepted standards for rectangular and pop-up and pop-under ads are based on pixels:

Square Pop-Up         250 x 250
Vertical Rectangle     240 x 400
Large Rectangle        336 x 280
Rectangle         180 x 150
3:1 Rectangle        300 x 100
Pop-Under        720 x 300

Just like a print banner ad, internet banner advertisements are prominently displayed, but the advantage in a Web banner is that the consumer can click on it to go to the next level of information about the product or service being marketed. Banner ads are rectangular and horizontal, wide enough to display across the Web page.

Animation or flash on a banner ad commands even more attention from the Web site visitor.

Micro Bar         88 x 31
Button    1        120 x 90
Button 2           120 x 60
Vertical Banner         120 x 240

Leaderboard        728 x 90

Skyscraper ads are vertical. More discrete than banner ads, they are popular because the Web site visitor isn’t disrupted from their focus on the site they want to view. Instead, the skyscraper ad offers site visitors another column of information—even if it is advertising—for the visitor to see and read.

Skyscraper ads are especially effective on sites containing hard news that guests are visiting with a specific purpose in mind.

Wide Skyscraper        160 x 600
Skyscraper        120 x 600
Half page Skyscraper    300 x 600
